LVHRD’s Bi-Fold 1 a Success
2006.Jun.30. Friday - by lvhrdLVHRD’s joint presentation from acclaimed graphic novelist Paul Pope and 8-bit music innovator Mark DeNardo drew a near-capacity crowd to the intimate Anthology Film Archives on Tuesday, June 27th. The event marked the launch of the organization's new Bi-Fold Series. Consistent with past LVHRD events, the event played host to a diverse crowd, including fans of graphic art, rock n' roll, Game Boys, and comics alike.
Paul Pope spoke candidly with the audience about his early influences, ranging from cave drawings to cubism, and he shared some of his childhood drawings to illustrate his beginnings and progression. To the disappointment of many bloggers in attendance, he alluded to his upcoming animated film project, but could not divulge details.
Complementing Pope's visual presentation, musician Mark DeNardo led the audience through a brief history of 8-bit music and discussed his influences. Similarities between the artists' work were apparent through the shared influence of Jack Kirby, among others, whose symbolic OMAC character became the subject for both a Pope comic and a DeNardo music project. Intermedia Artist Daniel Vatsky directed a visual presentation that merged Pope's presentation images with the 8-bit sounds.
How rare an occasion when a diverse audience such as the LVHRD membership gets to observe two incredibly innovative yet notably distinct artists treading the same creative ground? The newfound commonalities between Mr. Pope and Mr. DeNardo are precisely what Bi-Fold will continue to deliver to its audience at future events.
