Graffiti Research Lab, playing the cat and mouse game for years

2006.Nov.14. Tuesday - by lvhrd

Society as a whole has never looked kindly upon graffiti as an artform, often times cleaning off it’s signature mark quickly after its etched on. But that’s where the Graffiti Research Lab comes to the rescue, taking back the streets and returning it to the artists. Created by Eyebeam Atelier and Open Lab, the genesis of the G.R.L. was to find a way around the finger waggers and naysayers of the graffiti art form and keep the graffiti scene alive, which they’ve done. Through keeping an eye on the opposition and staying one step ahead of the competition with advancements in technology, they’ve managed to outfit the modern day graffiti artists with everything they need to keep the world alive with colors.

One of their most famous creations is the LED Throwies, which can be seen here. Filled with an LED, a battery (a CR2032 Lithium Coin battery is preferred), some electrical tape and a magnet, these one-use tools are meant to be thrown and cling onto metal objects, where they stick and glow for the life of the battery. The G.R.L first demonstrated these devices at Astor Place in New York. Watch the video for the results.

Check the G.R.L. out this Thursday, November 16, at LVHRD’s Bi-Fold II. The group will present their work and lead interactive demonstrations with the audience.
