Marc Marc Marc! Solo Show at Gagosian Gallery

2007.Jan.11. Thursday - by lvhrd

With our annual ARCHDL looming over the horizon, we’ve been fixing our eyes on all things architectural and sculptural in nature. It’s a bit overwhelming when it comes to being in New York City where we are surrounded by gargantuan skyscrapers containing gargantuan architecture firms, but one little treasure of an event has caught our eye!

January 25th, the Gagosian Gallery will be showing new works by Marc Newson, an international designer who’s made it on Time Magazine’s 2005 Top 100 List. Tour de Force!

Hailing from Austrailia, Newson is well-known for his distinctive design approach, in which curvy organic shapes are realized in industrial materials, such as nickel and aluminum. His illustrious design career includes a car design for Ford, watches for Ikepod, and clothing for G-Star.

His claim to fame is the most gorgeous Lockheed Lounge, a sleek curvilinear chaise lounge that he constructed in 1986 by hammering aluminum panels onto a fiberglass mold. The result is a dangerously sleek, yet surprisingly organic piece of furniture-cum-sculpture that broke records and someone’s wallet with a $1 million price tag at an auction last year. Mon Dieu!

Marc Newson, Marc Jacobs…we’re seeing a trend here, one that consists of beautiful creative entities endowed with the first name of Marc. Génies!

This is his first solo exhibition in the United States, so do be sure to come. It runs from January 25 - March 3, 2007 at the Gagosian Gallery. Information on the location and time can be found here.
