Suupaa Pop: Package Design from Japan

2007.Apr.3. Tuesday - by lvhrd
In what we hope will be a Japanese fun-plosion,”Suupaa Pop: Package Design from Japan” opens April 12th at the AIGA National Design Gallery on 5th Ave. The exhibit, which runs for about five weeks, will reflect the impact of Japanese risk taking and applied technology on concept design and world marketing.

“The packaging selections on display provide examples of unexpected use of materials, innovative products, beautiful aesthetics and inspiring surprises,” not to mention glimpses of that apparently in-utero spark given to Japanese children that makes them go out and make awesome that which other cultures have gotten bored with.

Answer honestly: Would you feel compelled to go see a design exhibition called, “A Mother’s Burden: Package Design from Russia?” Japan seems to offer all the fun without any of the burden of responsibilty. Their top designers could craft land mines that looked like obentos for all we care, we’d still gladly step on them just to get a bit closer to such consistently lovely work.

If you’re a member of AIGA you’re invited to an opening reception for Suupaa Pop at The National Design Gallery on Wednesday, April 11th from 6 to 8pm.
