Postopolis! opening: Geoff Manaugh on blog dust

2007.May.30. Wednesday - by lvhrd

Last night around the corner on Kenmare street Postopolis! began at the Storefront for Art and Architecture. We stopped by for a moment, slipped through slots in the open walls and heard Geoff Manaugh from BLDGBLOG speak on the spooky craft of blogging.

“If I were to stop writing BLDGBLOG,” Geoff said, “I'd be surprised if a year later anyone knew what it was.”

He emphasized the inherent ephemerality of blogs, saying that you'd still use a book on Middle East urban architecture written in 2002 for research, but a blog post on the same topic in even 2005 might as well be dust in the wind. No one wants to link to things more than a year old.

Slightly sad, considering the amount of research and time Geoff spends writing BLDGBLOG. The quality of thought and writing therein is no less fine than a book. Something about the binding, perhaps, protects an author's opinions against the rub of decades. Blogs have to survive in the naked internet wind.

Geoff might not have to worry about this for long, however. BLDGBLOG book rumors are in the air.

Postopolis! will run at the Storefront through Saturday. Great presentations all week.
Congratulations to BLDGBLOG, City of Sound, Subtopia, and Inhabitat for writing that elevates what a blog can be.
