At a Halloween parade somewhere in the lost and drifting American Midwest.

After FSHN DL IV last night we forgot it was Halloween until we saw some little guys in costumes on their way to school this morning. Superman and a ballerina.

Reminds us of when our mom made the Batman costume, the Skeletor costume, Dick Tracy…even had the walkie-talkie watch.

Then we’d go to the Halloween Parade at Rose Lane Elementary School where teachers summarily marched 500 8-year olds around the campus and through the classrooms for the amusement of parents.

But we loved it. Even when we had to stand by those bullies Todd Detter and Harley Gannon, the lumpy bastard who taught us to dunk french fries in milkshakes.

It was such a simple and unapologetic parade, nearly silent, single file, ending with everyone in huge circle on the soccer field. There may have been songs…
