The Geometry of Urban Sprawl

2008.Jun.3. Tuesday - by lvhrd

The team at Super Colossal, an Aussie Architecture firm, recently spent some time in Google Earth flying over Canberra, an Australian city that became a playground for modernist architects & their principles throughout the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. Let’s call it proto-Dubai.

The unique perspective offered via satellite allows the geometry, repetition, and symmetry of these structures to really shine, at least for the moment. It seems the city is doing it’s best to move away from these honeycomb-like structures and towards the tope industrial parks that are now so common.

I spent some time flying around Google Earth last month before flying home to California, and found some of the images of San Francisco’s International airport and outlying bay just as beautiful.

So here’s the scoop, we want to see where you are from, from above. Pull up the Google Earth, fly to the town you grew up in, and take a few shots of your home. Send them in to LVHRD and we’ll create a gallery.
