The City of Immortals & Dream Architecture

Geoff Manaugh on BLDGBLOG points out the work of artist Michelle Lord whose project “The City of Immortals” is on display in the UK as part of Architecture Week. (via BLDGBLOG)

“The City of Immortals” is based on the city glimpsed by the traveler in Jorge Luis Borges' short story, “The Immortal.” The city abounds in infinite arches, dead end corridors, stairways that intertwine and lead nowhere. It is not a labyrinth; it is an endless city, one that perhaps contains all possible permutation of architectural success and folly.

“The City of Immortals” is one example of dream architecture, architecture that appears to have no function or purpose; it does not shelter or contain any part of the real world: theoretical architecture. “The City of Immortals,” however doesn't even put forth a theory of architecture. In the scope of the world, it is the world. It seeks to be nothing, all hallways and staircases attempt their own purposes and are ends in themselves. Nothing works together, all aspects stand alone and are immortal in their present usefulness.

Yesterday we came across this Tunnel House (notcot). Look how curious people are in the pictures, as if thinking they could get used to it given enough time.
