A IS FOR ARMY MEN, ART AND ACIDIC

2008.Oct.17. Friday - by Beowulf Jones

Alright, it’s tough to ignore the big time allusion to modern warfare here. But looking just at the tongue-in-cheek mangling of toys, which letters in the this alphabet are your faves?

We’re particularly fond of groundhoggin’ V, Rose McGowan-esque F and the breakdancers of W.

These soldiers were professionally repurposed by artist Oliver Munday, who’s done a ton of graphic design, including some very spiffy illustrations for the New York Times. As his site’ll show ya, his portfolio’s all sorts of rad.

And some major kudos to Command Save, where we first caught wind of Munday. The blog keeps everyone in the Portland State graphic design cosmos in the know. (’Course, you don’t have to be in the program to appreciate its riot of creativity.)

This alphabet is cheesy and expresses a cliche sentiment. Really? War is violent? Soldiers die? I didn’t realize! Thanks mediocre alphabet!

After seeing this, I went home and tried to melt my replica knife collection into the letters of the alphabet. I mean, really: WHAT am I going to do with mock-ups of Scottish dirks and viking daggers? NOT GET LAID, that’s what! Unfortunately, as I held my lighter to my tanto, some of the melting blade dribbled all over my fingers. It was like getting maimed by the worst grilled cheese sandwich in history. Thanks a LOT, Oliver Munday!

    Hey Georgia O’keefe,

WHY DON’T YOU GET A DIRK?
