Over 4th of July weekend in New York City, the streets are blissfully quiet, the crowds subside in SOHO, and the whole damn place quiets down to the murmur. You feel like you’re in Berlin for a weekend. You also end up seeing things you normally don’t and for whatever reason, I noticed a lot of Smart cars this weekend parked on the street.
I couldn’t help but think further about the success of Smart car in the US so far, and hopefully what it means for other cars pushing the future…

the apartment is having another one of its unforgettable events tomorrow night tackling the ultimate in sustainable activities. Come be a part of a conversation so esoteric your IQ goes up by proxy, that is if you can make it inside (usually has a line around the block so come early).

The bleeding edge of electronic music is not for the fearful.
Josh Boughey has been experimenting with alternate strumming methods and firmware versions for a long time.
His newest experimental instrument, The Stribe is an 8-channel multi-touch controller for music or video software inspired by the Monome 40h.
The Stribe is an open source project with lots of documentation and it’s own forum, so break out your soldering iron and get blinking.

The Magpul FMG-9 convertible submachine is finally getting around to the blogs, even though the gunning community has known about it for a couple of decades. Maybe it’s time the design community stopped looking down it’s nose at gun enthusiasts since they have the sick deliverables on lock. PAYLOAD.
But the guy in this video is really what makes it, and probably why the thing has 2 million views. He’s doing this very every American who’s ever had to take out a squad of Deltas on the way to the…

Power to the People.
Design Democracy is opening the doors to this years ICFF to anyone with a great idea. The website was founded by Detroit based design/build studio Context Furniture “to prove that mass customization is a viable alternative to mass manufacturing.” Anyone may submit a design, vote for their favorites, and chat about all things mass customized. The top designs will be prototyped and displayed at the 2008 ICFF in NYC.
Some of the highest rated designs come courtesy of LVHRD members. One of my favorites, Rocker Prototype 03 by HollerDesign, is…

Refinery 29 steered us towards the hopelessly sexy Narita iPod case by WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie.
The case is named after Tokyo’s Narita airport that you can only get to by time-traveling to the year 2312.
Finished in Italian leather, it fits the iPod Nano and Video - a graceful show of empathy for those who have yet to join the rest of us in iPhone land.
No word on if WANT will design more to fit the new iPods.

These Italian vending machines won’t feed you, but with typical Italian flair they will make sure you have the freshest pair of socks every day. (notcot) Nothing’s worse than having to do laundry because you run out of socks, not wanting to do laundry, and so reusing a dirty pair. Not even the Vending Machine Challenge was that bad.
This reminds us of that episode of Cribs where Russell Simmons opened his dresser drawer and pulled out a white t-shirt still in the package. “I only wear them once,” he said.…
