Eat at Florent while you still can

I’m sad. The first restaurant I loved in New York will be closing sometime very soon.

22 years ago Florent opened in the Meat Packing District. This was when the area was mostly meat packing plants and S&M clubs. Today, Florent is in danger of becoming another victim of an insane real estate market in an insane neighborhood.

Florent’s landlord is raising the rent from $6K a month to $70K (and I thought my landlord was a greedy SOB.) Rumor has it that the diner will stay open as long as it takes…

V-Day reservations at The Castle

White Castle, that is.

We’re not vouching for what actually happens once you make a reservation. All we know is what the advertisement claims:

“Bring your significant other, moderately important friend, for a candlelit, tableside feast.”

Call 718-899-8404 ext. 300 to make a reservation at a New York White Castle, 5-9pm tonight.

Col-Pop: most revolting way to eat we’ve ever seen

The Col-Pop, a portable trough for simultaneous consumption of fried meat and soda, is the latest stepping stone in what is apparently our genetic pursuit to become the fattest, most worthless creatures on the planet.

Developed in South Korea for the chain BBQ Chicken and reviewed on Serious Eats by Adam Kuban, the Co-Pop comes in several different combinations of chunks and syrup water, the most prominent being popcorn chicken on top and soda underneath. Other permutations include soda and spaghetti, french fries, or fried mozzarella balls.

Kuban demonstrates the ease…

How many dumplings can you eat?

We could eat a million! Maybe even a billion! God those little bastards are good! Pork or veggie, steamed or fried, little dipping sauce…wow man we just lost all composure. Ok. Here goes.

The 4th Annual Dumpling Eating Contest is going down Sunday, August 5th at the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. First prize is a $1000, and while it doesn’t come for free (you have to eat) it probably tastes pretty good.

The record, so eloquently stated on the poster is “Man: 49 dumplings;…

Pinkberry opens in Nolita

We forgot Pinkberry was happening until we stepped outside this afternoon and saw gaggles of Japanese tourists clutching their white styrofoam tubs like they were iPhones (note: iPhone similes have replaced Holy Grail similes.)

They don’t like you taking pictures of the inside of Pinkberry (all those trade secrets), but that’s not so bad since there’s scarcely room to lift a camera once you’re inside.

The shop is one narrow hallway with some tables at the front and back. You order at a register and then elbow your way through a…

Green Edge Collabortive

The Green Edge Collaborative is a group based in Brooklyn that aims to raise community awareness to social and environmental issues by sponsoring local events like Supper Club and the Eco-Eatery Tour.

The Eco-Eatery Tours sound especially interesting: Green Edge eats its way through Brooklyn foodspots that exemplify what it means to eat sustainably.

We’re really sorry we JUST missed this month’s Tour to Habana Outpost on Fulton Street. It was yesterday! and we love Habana Outpost! Bicycle powered smoothies, solar-powered kitchen, and Mexican street corn. Sigh.

James Beard Awards: read this after lunch

Last night the James Beard Foundation Awards honored the best chefs and restaurants in the country at a food ball that makes our stomachs growl as much as reading this lunch blog. Guests at the reception reaped the windfall of superstar chef creations like “cotton candy wrapped around foie gras and peekytoe crab cappuccino with lemon verbena.” (Originally from Gridskipper).

New York took the lion’s share of awards. Best Chef: New York City went to David Waltuck from Chanterelle.

Check out the full list of winners and nominees. Then make a…

The ghetto gourmet returns to NYC

The Ghetto Gourmet is back in the NYC, just like we said it would be! Starting next week, LVHRD’s favorite improv dinner club will be downtown for four one of a kind meals in Tribeca and the LES.

You won’t know exactly where and what you’re eating until the day before your meal takes place: menu items and dining location are finally revealed via email. Chefs are taking suggestions for the dishes you’d most like to see prepared, affording you the luxury of eating whatever you so desire whilst seated — on…
