Ballet shoes vs. Aids

For second year in a row, Kristin Sloan of NYCBallet has collected signed merchandise from the NYCBallet to Auction on Ebay for the Aids walk 2008.  She launched the auction from her behind the scenes blog, thewinger.com.  Check out the Photos, they are really beautiful, I almost think they should sell prints of the the dance shoes that Sloan took.  Also take a look on thewinger, they have a section that demystifies the pointe shoe.

Adam Spangler interviews a prone ?uestlove

LVHRD member Adam Spangler sat down with Roots drummer ?uestlove to talk about his upcoming tour, the state of politics in hip-hop and what the Roots’ next iteration will be.

?uestlove was sleepy from DJing Quentin Tarantino’s birthday party in Vegas the night before, so he was lying down.
“The hopeless romantic in me has fallen for Obama hook, line and sinker. The realist in me wonders if you were to metaphorically see the United States as some Sunday morning frat house after a Saturday night party, what is the turnaround…

6 degrees of blog separation

We like kottke.org. After 10 year Jason Kottke’s got it down to what it needs to be. The Guardian puts Kottke as the 4th most powerful blog in the world.

This afternoon we picked up an interview with DMX from kottke.org. Just for fun, we traced the vias back to the source, XXL Mag.

We went through 5 other blogs before we got there, almost all of which were niche music blogs. Kottke is the first “Liberal Arts” blog we’ve seen with the story (Jason calls Kottke a Liberal Arts blog,…

Nirali Magazine

Searching for photos of Aziz Ansari today I came across Nirali Magazine, a web publication covering issues relevant to the South Asian community abroad and in the US.

I found myself–for the first time ever–reading a feature about marriage with genuine interest. “The United Colors of Desi” looks at the difficulties facing South Asians who choose to marry outside their race and religion. Great content and photography.

Nirali, unfortunately, faces the same problems of many independent publications: consistently publishing quality content with limited funding and unpaid contributors.

We hope you’ll check…

Gothamist interviews Anthony Lappé

Gothamist has an interview up with BIFOLD CNFLCT host Anthony Lappé about his graphic novel Shooting War. Set in 2011, the story follows Jimmy Burns, a young blogger sent to cover the still-bleeding conflict in Iraq after he captures a live suicide bombing at a Starbucks in Williamsburg.

Shooting War developed from a mix of Lappés experience as a journalist, his observations in Iraq and not so far-fetched imaginings of future cataclysm–the fruit of undead American economic hubris.

Something we’ve often wondered that Lappé brings up in the interview: why have there been…

2007 Weblog Awards

The best part about voting for your favorite nominees in the 2007 Weblog Awards is all the cool blogs you discover.

Two of supreme note:

Stuck in Customs photo blog has photos of the landscapes that populate our dreams.

Kanye West’s blog is a mix of behind the scenes content from the preparations from his upcoming tour, pictures of things he wants to buy, and pictures of Jay-Z’s Maybach. Hilarious.
