Thank You Dewars

PLY: What song is that?

When you catch a moment in between using your iphone as a lightsaber, automated dice roller, eatery slot machine, anything BUT a phone, let Shazam into your life. Any song that you can hear and hold your phone towards, Shazam will let you know track’s title, artist, and album. It will let you purchase it from itunes. It will suggest related videos on YouTube. It let’s you tag the song, share the song, on and on.

People want to play a song, not listen to it

“During the week in June when Mötley Crüe released “Saints of Los Angeles,” the first single from its new album, the song sold 14,000 copies on iTunes and 48,000 on Rock Band through Microsoft’s Xbox Live network.”

Such an amazing milestone. Our generation has not only demolished the way music is purchased (the death of the record store), but is now changing the way that it is experienced - plastic instruments in hand.

Smart vs Aptera

Over 4th of July weekend in New York City, the streets are blissfully quiet, the crowds subside in SOHO, and the whole damn place quiets down to the murmur. You feel like you’re in Berlin for a weekend. You also end up seeing things you normally don’t and for whatever reason, I noticed a lot of Smart cars this weekend parked on the street.

I couldn’t help but think further about the success of Smart car in the US so far, and hopefully what it means for other cars pushing the future…

WRK: Physical Passwords

You’ve got a lot of stuff on your desk. Some of its got a sentimental value, some of it just sits there. But what if it could do more than just sit there? What if your clutter could actually help you and your computer work faster?

Green Gallons

The issue of a filthy planet used to a bipartisan one, with left and right arguing over whether or not global warming even existed. Those were good times.

Now, everyone seems to be on the same side. Local patriots can get up in arms over the environment thanks to China’s role as a polluted ‘other,’ and those who’ve sided with mother nature all along have all the undiscovered, helpless Indian tribes they need to plead a case for cleanliness.

With everyone in agreement that Earth is toast if we don’t…

CHASE doesn’t mind if you go bankrupt

LVHRD’s offices are close in the heart of Soho, and there are an increasing number of Chase banks in the area.  I personally spend the occasional 10 minutes or so in line a few times a week.  Behind the tellers, CHASE recently installed three synchronized hi-def screens that are generally filled with bubbly marketing messages pushing the latest product or service offering.

Just recently they were marketing their mobile alert service, which allows customers to text their account number to a short code and receive an instant balance on your account.  The…

Teensexed JC Penny Advertisement

A third-party ad agency created the following spot for JC Penny, without approval from the boring clothing manufacturer nor their juggernaut ad corp Saatchi & Saatchi. The ad is really well done, and has a lot of blogs blogging because of its excited portrayal of teenagers preparing to do it.

The ad isn’t upsetting because of the teen sex, it’s upsetting because it implies rocking gear from JC Penny will get you laid. Not true! Go back and ask me when I was poor and 14.

Wear My Sunglasses at Cannes.

When anyone, who is anyone, in the Advertising business kicks it to Cannes, it’s up to the kids who think on the edge of the box to have some real fun.  We really enjoy Ben’s approach to social consumption. We just hope nobody had pink eye.

Put your name on the Moon: Deadline is Friday

Are you the kind of person that wants to send your name to the moon? Don’t answer that.

If you know a friend *nudge nudge* that thinks it would be cool to send their name to the moon in the form of raw, digital data, then  “send them” this link. They have to do it by Friday.

Alan Taylor, creator of TheBigPicture, interviewed

Thebigpicture’s creator, Alan Taylor, sat down with Andy from waxy.org to talk about his inspiration for his giant-photo news blog, what it’s like being a programmer with your own column for the Boston Globe, and how he’s automated the process of finding and posting the big pictures. An unlikely spark for this blog, a programmer, not a photographer, he’s ultimately a sharp mind generating unique content for the world to enjoy: worth knowing. Check it out.

VDO: Jamie Oliver: How they kill the chickens we eat

Celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver, colloquially known as the Naked Chef for his simple recipes, teaches a live audience how to determine the gender of adorable baby chickens. The audience then sets off on separating the boys from the girls, gleefully examining the birds’ tiny yellow bottoms. Oliver then turns the tables by explaining that male chicks - as they will not produce eggs - are considered useless in the poultry industry, and exterminates the whole batch (using an industry standard gas treatment) on set. The audience is moved to tears.…
