Safe from everything but your fellow survivors
Cutaway of a decomissioned ICBM silo near Tucson, AZ.
We know the end is always drawing rapidly and extremely nigh: visions of nuclear holocausts win Pulitzer Prizes.
If you want to be comfortable during mankind’s final days you should buy a missile base, the 20th Century’s Castle. Used during the the 1960s to house various ICBM missiles–Atlas E “coffin launchers,” Atlas F and Titan–these underground bunker-silos were capable of sustaining dozens of people for weeks at a time.
The founders of 20th Century Castles, Edward and Dianna Peden, live in a refurbished Atlas E site near Topeka, Kansas. Since they mid-90s they’ve been buying up sites all over the country and sell them to those wishing to avoid the coming zombie blitzkrieg. Most of the Castles are on fairly remote acreages, though–as their website points out–within driving distance of Super Walmart.
Just remember when you’re moving in: women and children first.

I’d be terrified of being trapped. Like a big expensive coffin.

Water from wells. So they say. Deep wells. Some of these beasts have swimming pools.

You brought up the road–John Hillcoat’s going to direct it for next year. He did the proposition.

I’m only buying one if I get to push a button every 108 minutes.
