NEW YORK EYE & EAR FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND
2008.Dec.9. Tuesday - by L. Bodeep
They’re icicles, aren’t they, New Yorkers? Hats and scarves and earmuffs or not, your ears can’t be coping with the sudden deep freeze very well. Temperatures are supposed to rise later in the week, but taking them out in warmer weather just doesn’t compensate for what they’re going through today.
Fortunately, there’s an aural extravaganza going on this weekend in Brooklyn that your ears (and eyes) are gonna love. More than 30 bands and 30 record labels converge on Brooklyn this Friday and Saturday for NY Eye & Ear, a record fair / music fest celebrating New York’s homegrown labels and performers.
Set in the Bushwick soundspace Vanishing Point, the festivities kick off Friday at 2 p.m. with the record fair portion of the event. Come 7 o’clock, the performances begin: half-hour sets from each band, followed by a late night dance part care of DJ Steve Lowenthal, Sto, and Chinatown DJs. Saturday follows the same format, but the bands start at 2 p.m. this time and Jane Tesco and Pieter Wierd spin into the night.
The lineup is incredible and too long to list here, but just know that you can catch the likes of Slasher Risk, Fluorescent Vibes, Aa, Excepter, Ducktails and Hells Hills. Participating labels include Baked Tapes, Abandon Ship Records, Young Tapes, Arbor and Obsolete Units.
See nyeyeandear.com (or visit the fest’s MySpace) for more info.
