The Assassination of Barack Obama & Hillary Clinton

Monday - by lvhrdClicking through Yazmany Arboleda’s installation, The Assassination of Barack Obama, I came across what looked like the base of a giant black penis mounted on the gallery wall; the following wide-angle shot of the room confirmed that, yes, a monster dong is indeed snaking through the Naomi Gates Gallery, right now in Chelsea.
I was extremely pleased to see that it was a penis. It is an incredibly obvious statement to make about our notions of blackness–the legend of the BIG BLACK COCK, negro virility etc etc. And if you’re going to go that route, tap the root of phallic fear & loathing & awe, then you owe it to everyone to do it big and loud and all over the place. My joy reminds me of Daryl Hanah’s joy in Kill Bill Vol. 2 at getting to use “gargantuan” in a sentence.
Each Assassination–Hillary and Obama–deals hamfistedly with the way the media portrays each of the candidates: a campaign poster for Hillary reads, “The Antidote to Niggeritis.” Arboleda wants to blow things up exactly as they are until you can read between the macro-type: Obam’s book is actually called: The Audacity of Black Hope.

There is nothing thought provoking about ignorance. As for this being original - well it was no more original post slavery when insecure white males used these same symbols of hatred to invoke fear and commit atrocities throughout the southern U.S. - virtually unchecked [guess that’s why people like this guy still feel, in 2008 this sort of thing is ok].

Its no different than those lawn jockeys and other disrespectful caricatures. No different because those items were intended to help insecure whites see the potent, intelligent and caring black man as some sort of beast or other diminished being. This bitch-ass “artist” probably is getting funded by some group who want to tarnish the image of the black man, elevated by Obamas campaign. Some groups who want to stoke white fear of Black primacy.
