Episode IV. Luke Skywalker looks UP towards the heavens, where he feels he belongs. He wants to escape the ground, to find the universe of possibility.

Episode V. Luke Skywalker dangles at the edge of a chasm. He has found his father–representing the place he thought he wanted to go–but it has only brought him anguish. He is still looking UP at his father, not watching where he is going. He has escaped the ground, but now hangs above a great drop and will fall down, down.

Return of the Jedi
Episode VI. Luke Skywalker stands on level ground, looking straight ahead. He has reached the place he was destined to be (his father) and made it his own (is at peace with his father). He no longer looks UP. Here, Luke’s face is illuminated with the same light from his father’s funeral pyre as it was in the first shot by Tatooine’s twin suns.

A sight re-tooling of the series (all 6) will reveal that the story is really about Obi-Wan. It would be interesting to see a shot-by-shot for him.

the six films follow R2D2, this list is a bit off.
1. R2 receives leias message
2. R2 goes to Dagobah
3. the sarlaac burping after it eats Boba Fett.
