6 degrees of blog separation

2008.Mar.18. Tuesday - by lvhrd

We like kottke.org. After 10 year Jason Kottke’s got it down to what it needs to be. The Guardian puts Kottke as the 4th most powerful blog in the world.

This afternoon we picked up an interview with DMX from kottke.org. Just for fun, we traced the vias back to the source, XXL Mag.

We went through 5 other blogs before we got there, almost all of which were niche music blogs. Kottke is the first “Liberal Arts” blog we’ve seen with the story (Jason calls Kottke a Liberal Arts blog, an unusually collegiate and antiquely inspiring description that seems to elevate the cultural trappings therein).

But noneof the other blog rings we fell through on the way to XXL are on the Guardian’s list of Most Powerful Blogs even though they had the story first. Between Kottke and XXL:

andreaharner.com (non-music blog)

thedailyswarm.com

thelistenerd.com

maximumfun.org

nahright.com

Jason Kottke wasn’t nearly the first to this story, but he was one of the first places to pull it off the indie rock music blogs and dispense it concisely to a broad range of media.

the funniest thing about this chain of links is that I run Nah Right and work for XXL so I posted it in both places. it’s pretty funny that you ended up back at Nahright so indirectly.

Like one those FOXTAIL toys, the things with a baseball connected to a long color-flag tail that you swung around and around–momentum, momentum–they always ended up in strange places, in a tree or behind you.
