Phil Toledano is a native Londoner who has called New York his home for almost 15 years. He has been a LVHRD member since summer 2006 when he competed in PHTHRD: Photography Duel.
A couple weeks ago it came to our attention that a photograph taken by Phil inspired a new song by Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields for NPR’s Project Song. I got in touch with Phil to see what he’s been working on since he competed at PHTHRD: mostly talking to phone sex workers for a new book project…
Included in our GET TRIO email this morning was a piece on Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields’ new album, Distortion, coming out later this month.
We clicked through the link and found a piece on NPR’s “Project Song”: a musician picks a word and image to inspire a song they have 48 hours to complete.
For the first installment of the show, Stephen Merritt selected the phrase, “1974”, and Phil Toledano’s photograph of man wrapped in dolls; the union gave birth to the song “Man of a Million Faces.”
Toledano competed…
Vanity Fair selected Phil Toledano’s picture of a giant American devouring a forest as one of the best of the year.
The picture came from the May 2007 VF’s Green Guide: “America’s 301 million people—5 percent of the world’s population—use a quarter of the earth’s energy and consume paper at an annual rate of 740 pounds per capita.”
Phil competed in PHTHRD: Photography Duel last summer and we auctioned one of his photographs at Dewar’s Repeal Day in December.

This morning in the PHTHRD voting log we noticed a script that loves the work of Leo Zacharias.
Two IP addresses had submitted a massive number of votes in rapid succession over a two hour period.
We talked to Leo about it and he agreed the best thing to do was remove the votes. We’re sure he had nothing to do with the script.
The rest of the voting logs are free of inconsistencies and we’re confident the results tomorrow will reflect the will of our audience. Voting ends at midnight!…

If you’re angry about the The Mayor’s Office of Theater, Film, and Broadcasting proposed restrictions to amateur filmmaking and photography in NYC head to Union Square this morning with your camera to join the Ad Hoc Task Force Against Really Bad Ideas Rules and Regulations protest from 11am-2pm.
The new rules would require any group of two or more people using a camera (still or motion) in a single public location for more than a half hour to get a city permit and insurance. The insurance could cost as much as…
We’re perusing the flickr streams and finding some really great coverage of PHTHRD. This series is from longtime LVHRD member Graham Slick. Looking at his photos you’d think we sent people to the ER; honest it’s just camera tricks.
